Hey... do you guys know of any natural language where the 'y' is pronounced like an "u" (like the English "oo")? I'm thinking of adding that to my conlang but it sounds a bit contrived to me...
Came to think of it: if you want to expand beyond the 5-vowel system but still within the unadorned Latin alphabet one of these arrangements may suit you better (Nos. I-II and I-IV being identical apart from relative assignment of "y" and "u". No. I is similar to what actually is found in Swedish wrt to these two letters, while No. III is what is actually found in Welsh):

I

iy w
eu o
a

II

iu w
ey o
a

III

i uw
e yo
a

IV

i yw
w uo
a

V

y w
i u
e o
a

VI

i w
eyu
a o

VI

iyw
e u
a o
